Chapter Fourteen: Secret Talks
In the following days, Lin Li was extremely busy.
Although Grian had arranged for Kevin to run errands for him, there were still many things that he had to do in person, such as going to the library to copy down spells.
Looking at the towering piles of magic books in front of him, Lin Li finally understood why that old man Andurin always said that the world of magic was endless... There were so many books, just looking at the catalog would take several years, let alone studying the spells recorded on them.
Lin Li has been sitting in the library for two days now. The magic book recorded about twenty or thirty spells, all of which he thought were useful magic.
He chooses magic standards, usually with only two requirements, first is that the spell length should be short, second is that the element structure should be simple.
Most magicians would probably sneer at these two standards.
In the same level of magic, the longer and more complex the spell is, the greater its power will naturally be. Since they all consume the same amount of magical energy, who wouldn't want to choose the one with greater power? It's just like playing mahjong - when you pick up a good hand, who doesn't want to try for a clear win or something?
But for Lin Li, the size of the power was actually not important.
"Not seeking the best, but seeking the most!" With the support of his vast spiritual power, Lin Li had never worried about running out of magic, let alone being unable to bear the weight of his spiritual power.
It's actually the long-term chanting of spells that makes him more likely to fall into danger. Since he can't solve the problem of spellcasting speed in a short period, Lin Li simply chose some simple magic to learn. After all, his magical power won't run out, and if one doesn't work, he'll just use several more. With dozens of spells striking down, what can't be knocked down?
In the meantime, Greg came over to show his concern and after witnessing Lin Li's bizarre selection criteria, the old fatty couldn't help but feel a chill run down his spine...
Look at those twenty or thirty spells and see what they are.
Mind Control, Witch's Eye, Arcane Missile, Weakness, Paralysis, Magic Shield, Magic Amplify, Insanity, Berserk, Petrification...
Apart from a few purely offensive spells like Arcane Missiles, the rest are all sinister and venomous control spells.
Greer didn't say anything, rubbed his nose and slipped away. As soon as he went out the door, he whispered to himself, "Is this kid really a disciple of Andrew? How did I not know that Andrew had these hobbies..."
Transcribing magic is a real hassle, especially for someone like Lin Li who's barely literate. His language foundation was too poor, and apart from Common Speech, all other languages were like heavenly script to him. As a result, he had no choice but to flip through various language primers while transcribing those lines of incantations into his spellbook.
These twenty-odd spells took him almost two days.
It wasn't until he lifted his head from the pile of books that it was already evening on the second day.
Lin stood up and stretched his waist, putting the books on the table back in their original positions. Just as he was about to leave the library, he saw Kevin walking in.
"Ferré, have you finished copying the spell?" Kevin walked in just as Lin was putting away his books. "Perfect timing, Guildmaster Grian asked me to tell you that he's waiting for you in the grand hall on the first floor. He wants to see you after you've finished copying the spell, it seems like he has something to discuss with you."
"What's so urgent?" Lin Li was somewhat stunned. The fat old man had just come to the library in the morning, what thing didn't he say at that time?
"He didn't tell me anything, just asked you to go over there."
"Oh... thank you."
Lin came out of the library and soon found Ge Rui'an in the first floor hall.
The fat old man is in a good mood today, instructing two young monks.
"Idiots! Can you be any more stupid? You can't even complete such a simple elemental arrangement, what do you people put in your brains all day?" Of course - his way of pointing out mistakes was always a bit... special.
Two young lawyers were scolded until they were covered in sweat, but they didn't dare to defend themselves and could only lower their heads with a wronged expression, listening obediently to the old fat man's scolding. When Lin Li came down, the two of them seemed to have found a savior and quickly cast pleading glances at Lin Li.
"Director Gwain, I heard you're looking for me?" Seeing the two of them being so pitiful, Lin Li shook his head and first greeted the fat old man.
"Fei Rei you came." This indeed helped the two mages out of a predicament. Seeing Lin Li come over, Ge Rui An also didn't have time to continue scolding them: "Come, come, I'll talk to you about something."
"You two..." Halfway through, Ge Lan seemed to have thought of something again, but hesitated for a moment and helplessly waved his hand at the two hapless mages: "Forget it, just die as far away from me as possible..."
Gillian didn't know what was going on either, and he seemed very cautious all the way, even bringing Lin Li into the guild's guest room to avoid being disturbed.
If there was one place in the Gallos Magic Guild that could be considered safe, it would undoubtedly be this guest room. Outside the door were seven wizard's eyes, monitoring every move around them from all angles. Behind the tightly closed door, a magical detection array was emitting a faint magical fluctuation, making it impossible for any magical surveillance to escape Greian's notice.
Lin Li saw that Ge Rui'an was so serious and knew it must be something big, so he pulled over a chair and sat down quietly, waiting for him to speak.
Today, Grian seemed particularly cautious. Even in the safest guest room of the guild, he was still not at ease and cast another life detection spell to confirm that there were no other living beings around before asking in a low voice: "Tell me, when did you offend the Merlin family?"
"Merlin family?" This was the second time Lin Li had heard Ge Rui'an mention this name, the first being a few days ago during the level certification, he remembered that the old fatty seemed to have gotten very angry at that time, vowing to do something about this Merlin family...
Just when Lin Li was somewhat perplexed, he suddenly thought of someone.
Cromwell! Yes, it's Cromwell!
Just like when he first arrived in Gallos City, this enthusiastic magician seemed to have mentioned the same name before. If Lin Li didn't remember incorrectly, his original words should be - "If there's anything we can help with, just let us know. The Merlin family still has some say in the Gallos Magic Association."
"You mean... Cromwell?"
"That's right, it was him." Gruen nodded: "Do you still remember the day you just arrived?"
"I remember."
"That day you just went to handle the procedures with Kevin, Cromwell's people came knocking on the door, humph, this idiot actually asked me to kick you out of the guild, what a blind dog!"
"At the time, I didn't have time to bother with him, so I just let Colin take care of it and warn that idiot not to mess with me. As I was saying, Griffin grumbled: 'I didn't expect this moron to be so clueless, and yet he sent someone again this afternoon, even daring to threaten me, saying that if I don't do things his way, he'll convince the family to cut off business ties with the guild.'"
Lin Li didn't say anything, just smiled and stared at Ge Rui'an.
Gryffindor has been in charge of the Galos Magic Association for decades, and it's not an ordinary person. If even a Cronwell can't deal with him, he would have been swallowed up long ago without even leaving any bones behind.
Since he brought it up himself, he must have had plans in his mind for a long time.
In Lin Li's view, the fat old man's angry expression was just an attitude, a supportive attitude towards himself.
So Lin Li said nothing and just waited for Ge Rui An to speak up.
"Hmph! He's really blinded by his own arrogance, not even considering who he's threatening!" Grian indignantly declared, his anger irrepressible: "Although the Gallos Magic Guild has been struggling to maintain itself in recent years, it hasn't fallen so low as to be threatened by others! Since I'm the one who brought you into the guild, I must take responsibility for you. Anyone who wants to touch you will have to ask me, Grian, if I agree first!"
"Thank you, President!"
