Chapter 9: Imp mischief

The morning sun shined down upon Goldenleaf City. Businesses began opening up, voices and sounds filled the streets, and the day to day cycle began once more. Amongst the morning atmosphere however was a more peculiar and interesting start to some guardsman's mornings.

  "Stop that Imp!!!"

  "Chase her down!!"

Jumping out of the window of a second story building, an imp lands onto her hind hooves, quickly jumping up to run. Unluckily for her however, a group of guardsman in advance stormed the alley, cornering her on both exits.

"You've nowhere to go lass. Kindly surrender the things you've stolen and you'll only get about two days jail time, max."

Grinning wide, she puts both hands on her hips. "Pfft. Your little bases have all those precious little tools just sitting there for the taking! It's not like you're gonna use em, you lot don't even fight nothings! Oh, and also. Whoever you have for a cook back there? Amazing!" Cackling, she licks her lips slowly. "I've made sure to take some of the things from the kitchen too! I mean the pork chops are just too good to not take! Expertly seasoned, prepared and made perfectly! Mmm, tasty!"

A guardsman takes a couple steps closer to her. "We don't want to use force, please just surrender what you have stolen."

  "Hmmmmmm...na. Na i don't think I will."

With a cheeky cackle, the imp quickly takes out a flash bomb and throws it to the ground. The bright light engulfs the area, stunning the guards momentarily as she makes her escape.

  "Don't lose sight of her!"

Pouncing off of the alleyway walls, she makes her way onto the rooftop of a nearby building, hopping from roof to roof cackling.

Blindness and disorientation ceasing, the guardsman in the alley regain sight, looking around.

  "We lost her again."

"Yeah, third time this week. She's growing more bolder, actively wanting to be chased now."

One of them leans against the wall. "She's more nimble than a bloody prowler fish. How the blazes do we even catch her? We had her cornered, and she still got away."

"With the help of a smoke bomb though! Without it we woulda had her."

"Yeah yeah. But here's a reminder, she's an imp! Faster than a falcon they are. She coulda probably avoided grasp anyway, without the smoke bomb."

Hearing loud footsteps, the guardsman turn to the source. Two other guardsman, following behind the high ranking officer within the area arrives on scene. "What's going on here?"

"Sir! It's the imp again. She's stolen some goods from our supply."

The officer crossed his arms. "So let me get this straight. Seven past instances, today marking the eighth, this thief has escaped our grasp? That what I'm hearing?" He sighs. "Well? What are you all waiting for?! Stop standing around and go find the thief! Search every nook and cranny."

  ...

Within the room of an inn, a certain Suxarine springs up from his bed, laughing. "New day new me!! Ahahahaha, mooooorning world!!"

Our hero spends the first few minutes of the morning getting himself ready for the day. Grooming his fur, brushing his fangs, the usual. After the essentials is finished, he decides to check over himself in the nearby mirror. He looks over himself, grinning while doing so. "Yep, there goes my eyes again. Changing color. As usual. But hey!! Purple and green look pretty! Like me, hehehehe!! Hey, what's this?"

Looking to the top of his head, he sees he's forgot to groom a tuft of fur. Using a comb and brush, he neatly grooms the tuft, grinning wide as he finished. "Ok. NOW I look good!"

He began with the final touches of getting ready for the day...putting on outing clothes! He quickly puts on his usual outfit, humming a tune to himself as he does so. After a spell, he finishes up everything, looking to himself in the mirror once more before he left.

Upon leaving the room, his ears immediately perked up at the many voices within, all discussing a variety of things and topics. Walking up to the nearby counter, he speaks to the innkeep. "Morning!!! Um, you said those who paid for a room get free breakfast riiiiiight?"

  The man nods. "Mhm."

  "Great!!"

Kak-Yak plops into a nearby table, eagerly waiting for his oh so beautiful, wonderful free breakfast. As he waits, he can't help but overhear the many conversations in the morning atmosphere of the inn. Most of them are pretty boring, although, one particular conversation catches our hero's attention.

Two tables away, he overhears a rather interesting conversation from two Zirikey.

"Saw that notice outside? On the notice board?"

"Mhm. Notorious thief is still on the run. Local guard is paying decent coin for the capture of some imp. They even have a drawing detailing what the thief looks like."

"Yeah yeah, an imp. Well, eventually someone will catch the thief. Only a matter of time."

"Yeah, but even the city guardsman have had trouble."

"Trust me. Eventually, this thief will mess up. Like I said, only a matter of time."

The two go back to a prior, more uninteresting convo. Kak-Yak thinks for a moment. Catching this so called thief could make him some quick coin. He laughs lowly, grinning. "Hehehehehehehehe."

Springing from his seat, our hero quickly leaves the inn, about to take up the challenge to catch a thief! Although, he could have stood to at least stay and wait for his breakfast to be ready! Oh well.

Outside, our hero walks up to the notice board near the inn, immediately looking to the wanted poster. It says about everything he already knows. At the bottom of the poster, he sees a location. Somewhere he can report to if he finds anything suspicious, or if he manages to catch the thief. Without giving it much thought, he heads for the location listed on the wanted notice.

Short while later, he makes it to a well guarded and fortified...area? He doesn't really know what the place is.

"This place looks crazy!" Kak-Yak walks up to a guardsman near the entrance to the base. "Hey! I'm here to learn about the thief! Because I, the great Kak-Yak, shall bring the scoundrel to justice!"

The guard stares as the Suxarine poses. He isn't all that amused. "...Right...well, you'll have to talk to the base officer for more info. Alright, put any and all weapons onto the table here and I'll escort you inside."

Following the order, Kak-Yak does so, following behind the guard as he leads him deeper inside. Eventually after much walking the two arrive within a command room of sort, the officer sitting and writing something on a map.

"Sir. Someone for you. He's here about the recent incidents involving the thief. The one that's stolen goods from one of our bases yesterday."

The officer waves a hand. "Noted. You may leave."

Our hero watches as the guardsman leaves, leaving Kak-Yak and the officer alone together. "Man!!! This place is wild, I mean it's so cool man, I ain't never seen a place like this."

"That is because it's reserved for city guard only. After all, we must have positions set up to ensure peace within the city...but you did not come to discuss this, you've come to talk about the thief." He folds his hands behind his back. "I shall give you the rundown. An imp woman has been stealing goods from our bases, as well as local businesses. Normally thieves hide in the shadows, try to at least attempt being stealthy. The same was true for this imp at first, but she's grown bold as of late."

"Oh!!! So instead of the cover of night, she does it at daytime!"

"That and the fact she actively wants to be seen. Chased even. It's getting annoying in all honesty. Even more frustrating given that she does her thievery randomly. Can be the very next day, or a month later. No matter, she will soon be caught and given time in jail to think about her actions."

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

He gestures for Kak-Yak to step over to a large table, which showcases a large map detailing every part of the city, even to the smallest of alleys. "The thief was last cornered here. The alley in question is within the eastern square of the city, so it will not be hard to find. I shall contact the guardsman there to assist you in your investigation." He gestured to the door. "We have nothing more to discuss. Bring us the thief and you'll be rewarded with the amount of coin listed on the notice. If you cannot find and apprehend her, yet are able to provide us new info regarding her, you'll still be payed, but not on the agreed amount. You may go now."

Kak-Yak gives a quick pose, smiling giddy like. "Do not worry!! I, Kak-Yak, shall bring the thief to justice!!! Just you watch haha!!"

"...Kak-Yak...forgot Suxarine had funny names sometimes." He shakes his head. "I like your attitude, Kak-Yak. Go, find the thief if you can. Remember, eastern square is where you should investigate first."

"On it!!! I'm off immediately sir!!!"

Kak-Yak left quickly, making his way back to the entrance of the base. The guardsman near the entrance hands Kak-Yak back his sword and shield.

"Thank you for my stuff back!!!"

  "Mhm."

Kak-Yak, ever so jolly heads straight to the eastern square of the city. On his way, he makes sure to take in the morning atmosphere. The early rays of the sun lighting up the city, the early sounds sounding throughout. As usual for early morning, the beautiful birds sing all around, creating their own song within the city. Most would think of it as stupid annoying birds, as usual, but not Kak-Yak. With a smile, he continues his walk, humming to the melody of the birds all around.

After much walking, Kak-Yak eventually arrives to eastern square. Merchants set up shops, people talk and converse as usual, so on and so on. Spotting a guardsman, Kak-Yak walks up to him.

"Hello good sir!!! I'm here about a notice!!! A scoundrel, thief!! I was told they did some STEALING here yesterday!!"

The guardsman simply nodded. "You must be the one we were notified of. Yeah, someone had broken into one of our bases and stolen some goods. We nearly had her, but she surprised us with a blasted smoke bomb of sorts, ended up escaping." *Head shake* "No matter. You're here now, and since the notice is fresh and new, you best hurry before someone else try's to steal your bounty. Alright, follow me, I'll show you where we had cornered her."

Gesturing for Kak-Yak to follow, the guardsman led him into a nearby alleyway, which was already still being investigated.

"Alright, this is where we last cornered her. Already told you what happened, but hey? Who knows, perhaps you can help somehow." He turns to the others. "This guy's gonna help with the investigation. That message from the officer? Yeah, this is who he meant...so don't like, I don't know, try to ask why he's here. Anyways, I'm off."

The guardsman heads back to the square, leaving Kak-Yak with the others in the alley. Grinning wide and placing a paw over his chest, he speaks. "I, Kak-Yak shall help!!! I shall bring the thief to justice! Just you watch ahahahaha!! Now, I shall...begin!!! Investigating hehehehehehe."

They all sort of just look at him confused, yet don't really say anything, resuming talking to one another about the situation. As for Kak-Yak, he began looking around for anything that could help. After some digging around, he comes across nothing useful. Well, nothing that hasn't already been checked by the guardsman. Thinking to himself, he wonders how she could have escaped being cornered. Well, besides using the smoke bomb, our hero wonders where this thief could have escaped from.

With the cogs turning in his head, he looks up, grin forming.

"I know what you're thinking." A guardsman walked near him, pointing to the roof. "We already searched the rooftops, nothing of note was found."

"Well maybe because you just didn't LOOK hard enough, heheheheheh. ROOOOOOF TIIIIME!!!"

Kak-Yak climbs up a nearby pipe to make it to the rooftop. The guardsman below wonder why he didn't just use the stairs inside. Oh well!

Our hero upon making it onto the roof began searching around. At first nothing could be found, which is to be suspected he thought. Minutes and minutes are spent wasted as he failed to find any actual evidence that the thief had left anything behind as she made her escape. Flailing his hands, Kak-Yak figures he won't be finding anything of note up here, and decides to head back down.

Kak-Yak slides down the pipe of the building, dropping onto his hind paws. "Hehe, stuck the landing. So uh, yeah, couldn't find anything up top sadly."

"We told you, we already looked up the-"

Stopping mid sentence, the guardsman gets a message through the built in communicator inside his headgear. Unbeknownst to Kak-Yak, the other guardsman nearby receive the same message, all of them immediately stopping what they're doing and heading for eastern square.

"You, Suxarine. Follow us into the square! The thief has been spotted nearby!"

  "Oh!! U-uh, ok!!!"

Following being them, Kak-Yak enters the eastern square once more. Almost immediately, he spots multiple guardsman exiting from what looks to be a church of some kind, chasing after...an imp!!!

  "So...uh...is that her orrrrrr-"

"Yes! If you want the reward for her you best help us chase her down, now move!"

Without further delay, Kak-Yak sets his sights on the imp, quickly chasing behind her as the guardsman pursue behind. Looking behind her as she ran, she spots Kak-Yak.

"Ahhhhhh local guard finally sent someone else after me eh?! Hahahahaha, you'll never catch me handsome! Just like alllllll the others hahaha!"

"You know complementing me won't do anything, hehehehehe."

Rolling her eyes, she quickly looked around as she was pursued, heart beating fast. She spots a large gathering near a popular location, a museum of some sorts.

She holds up her arms in front of her as she burst through a window into the museum.

"Woooooooow ok ok, we're doing this now!"

Kak-Yak follows behind, wincing in pain a little as he grazes against some broken glass. Through a wide and open space our hero gives chase, many bystanders inside the museum looking on in confusion. The imp quickly makes a sharp turn up a long staircase, Kak-Yak following behind.

"You know ima catch ya, so just give up already."

"Pah, yeah, like I'd listen and immediately get arrested. You're just gonna have to catch me the hard way hahaha!!"

Bursting through a door, the imp rushes through a crowd of bystanders before promptly busting through yet another window.

  "Oh come on!"

Our hero follows behind, being grazed once more on another stray shard of glass as he jumps through the window. He resumes chase, the imp leading him through various locations throughout the city. Despite her attempts to lose him throughout many crowds, trying to use rooftops and other means, he was still hot on her.

Turning a corner, the imp comes face to face with a guardsman...although, she immediately recognized it wasn't a regular run of the mill guard. It was an officer.

"Yeaaaaa, hiiiiii, you never saw me here."

  "Get her!!!"

She chucks a smoke bomb onto the ground and makes her escape. Despite her trick, the officer wasn't having any of it, using a magic spell to nullify the effects of blindness on himself.

As for Kak-Yak, well, he resumed chase, having closed his eyes before the bomb went off to shield himself.

"Hehehehehehe, you'll have to do better than that to stop me hahaha!!"

Now being pursued by both this Suxarine, AND an officer, the imp was in hot water. Figuring she doesn't really have many options left, she sets her sights onto a very populated area nearby, yet again."

"Man, this is a real workout!! Oh, hey, your armor looks cool! Like, really cool!"

The officer simply groaned under his helmet at Kak-Yaks words. "Focus on the chase please if you intend to help."

The imp, still being chased led her pursuers through a large crowd, rushing inside a large gathering inside a well decorated building.

"Hahahahaha, you'll all never catch me! I'm too nimble and quick for you lot, hehehehe."

Multiple party goers look on in confusion as the imp led her pursuers through the large and wide open space inside. Coming from all exits and entrances, multiple guardsman entered the party, blocking off all exits and securing any means of a sly escape from even the littlest corner.

Completely trapped in now, the imp backs away...onto the dance floor! She simply shrugs, staring to dance along with the party goers.

"Welp, I got too carried away. Knew I shouldn't have robbed those weirdos. Oh well, what can you do."

Alongside Kak-Yak, the officer pointed. "Arrest her."

Before the other guardsman could move in, our hero spoke up. "Hold on sir." He grins wide. "You may arrest her...after the dance party HAHAHAHA!"

Kak-Yak went up to the imp. He extended a paw forward, the lights within the party lighting up the area, shining off of his fur. "Yeah yeah you're a thief or whatever, but hey? Might as well make the most out of your currently free time right? So cmon, let's dance! And hey, the guards nearby will arrest you anyway if you try anything, so just use this opportunity to have some fun!"

She looks to the Suxarine, then to his extended paw. "Pfft, yeah, I take your paw and you'll just sneak some handcuffs on me, or better yet throw me onto the floor, THEN apply the cuffs?! Huh?" She said, voice sassy and hands on her hips.

"Well no, but you're gonna get arrested anyways ma'am, I'm just offering a little fun to your otherwise bad situation." He steps a little closer, giving her a warm and gentle smile.

"..." She gives an annoyed look as she crossed her arms. She quickly tapped her left foot onto the floor below, a sigh of unease. "...Well..." Thousands of thoughts flew through her mind. She didn't know what to do here, the tapping of a hoof sounding faster and faster.

"Uh...sir...should we really be allowing thi-"

"Can it." The officer said, his voice authoritative and loud. "We have her surrounded anyways. Let's just observe. If she trys anything we'll move in for the arrest."

The party goers all around begin to observe the situation. Some stay quiet about it, resuming their own party time, while others cheer for the imp to simply have a good time.

"..." *Clears throat* "I guess it won't hurt...pah, whatever." She takes the Suxarine's paw into her clawed hand.

"See? That wasn't so hard now was it?! Now let's dance hehehehehehe." Without warning, Kak-Yak began to dance with the imp as she cackled at the entire thing, beginning to dance along.

"Careful, I might end up clawing you up mid dance!! Hahaha!" The imp held a wide smirk as she moved to the music playing, beginning to sway her hips here and there.

"You're not the only one with claws here hahaha."

The two began having a grand time together, forgetting pretty much the entirety of the whole chase that transpired not too long ago. Kak-Yak and the imp pretty much had taken the dance floor, many people cheering for the two as they danced together, laughing together.

"...So...uhhh...do we just wait here or what?" A guardsman says, arms crossed.

"We were told just to watch the imp, and to rush in and arrest her if she trys to escape."

  "Huh. Alright then."
